  5.     After barely surviving an attempted coup in December,
  6. President Corazon Aquino promised to take vigorous action
  7. against her foes. But with the military renegades who vied to
  8. overthrow her safely underground, she has had trouble finding
  9. an enemy to get tough with. Last week, however, the President
  10. squared off against Juan Ponce Enrile, the lone opposition
  11. member of the Senate and a Defense Minister under Ferdinand
  12. Marcos. Enrile had been Aquino's nemesis ever since their brief
  13. political alliance broke up acrimoniously in November 1986. At
  14. that time, soldiers linked to Enrile had reportedly tried to
  15. stage a coup against the government.

  17.     In Manila last week the National Bureau of Investigation
  18. charged Enrile with rebellion, which carries a penalty of up
  19. to twelve years. According to the bureau, Enrile was said to
  20. have been seen with mutineers on the day the December coup
  21. attempt began. One of those reportedly observed by three
  22. waiters who were catering a meal at Enrile's suburban
  23. residence: Gregorio ("Gringo") Honasan, a leader of the
  24. rebellion and Enrile's erstwhile security chief. The Senator
  25. has denied the allegations and said the government was
  26. "clutching at straws." He added, "I welcome the opportunity to
  27. face up to this problem so we can settle it once and for all."
